With 3 kids, you'd think I'd heard of everything by now! My oldest has a huge list of environmental allergies plus asthma. He had his tonsils removed at age 6 because they were causing sleep apnea and acid reflux. My daughter gets abdominal migraines (terrible stomach aches for no real reason). But then my youngest was born, March 2015. Except for having reflux, he was a perfect baby until we started solid foods. The first time he tried rice cereal, he got sick. We waited a few weeks and tried oatmeal and he was ok. But the second time he had it, sick again. Our doctor said skip the cereals and go to the fruits and vegetables. And everything was fine until 2 months later when we tried oatmeal again and got the same response.
At this point, the gastroenterologist wanted us to see our allergist. December 2015, he was allergy tested for any foods that have caused him to be sick, fussy, grumpy, etc. All the tests were negative. The allergist concluded that he had FPIES, Food Protein Intolerance Enterocolitis Syndrome. FPIES is similar to food allergies, but instead of hives, throat closing, and an epipen, he projectile vomits and/or has diarrhea. If he is vomiting, then he is extremely lethargic and is completely out of it for about 4 hours.
FPIES is usually outgrown by the time a child is 3-5 years old. The allergist does not want him to eat potatoes, rice, wheat, barley, or oats for 1 year. When we go back to see him in December 2016, we will start with potatoes, then rice and wheat. Once he is a little older, we will try barley and oats.
We are one of the lucky ones that he has a lot of 'safe' foods. Unfortunately, his 'non safes' are very common and make reading labels crucial.
Non-safe:
Oat
Wheat
Rice
Barley
Potato
Mango
Pears (possibly ok in small amounts)
Safe:
All fruits and vegetables except those above
Quinoa
Ham
Pork chops
Haven't tried yet due to his age:
Dairy
Eggs
